UK Diving with Harrogate Sub-Aqua Club

I am Brian the clubs Diving Officer, while the visibility and temperature around the UK rarely match the conditions found in diving resorts there is still a tremendous variety of exciting, safe diving to be undertaken. In 2006 and 2007 visibility was excellent , and on many occasions was been better than the local swimming pool!

The days of the cold frogman in a wet-suit have long gone. Today, a dry-suit keeps out the cold, and lets you swim among a family of inquisitive seals on the Farne islands, watch a Lobster or Crab wave its claws at you as you invade its space, or marvel at the power of the sea as you glide over a seemingly impregnable wreck. Every dive is a new experience with unusual features, strange colours and marine life, or intriguing corners to explore, and who knows, you may find an interesting souvenir or two!

Dry-suits have converted scuba-diving in UK waters from the preserve of an enthusiastic but rugged minority, to a sport that anyone can take part in, without suffering from hypothermia. There are two styles of dry-suit, and through integrated shoes, and effective seals on the wrist and neck, only your hands and head come into contact with the water, and on those neoprene gloves and hoods keep any remaining chill at bay.

With two high-powered Rigid Hull Inflatable Boats (RHIB), the branch runs a wide variety of dives at favourite locations such as the marine reserve at St.Abbs, the Farne Islands, and the Western and Northern Isles of Scotland. These allow us to cover a wide range of different dive types and dive sites, and for any diver, the first ride and dive from a rib is an unforgettable experience.

The North sea also offers a range of easy shore dives in summer. St Mary`s Island, St Abbs and Weasel Loch are all within two hours drive and offer dives in the 4 to 8m depth range
